Fort Greene crime spree

We've found out in the past two days of two house robberies. In both cases, the robber was able to enter the house through the backyard-- one a ground floor apartment and another a third floor apartment.

In the ground floor apartment, the thief pushed in the screen, lifted up a window and opened up the backyard door. In the third floor apartment, the Spiderman-wannabe may have been hanging off the fire escape and opened up a window that was slightly ajar.

In both cases, the cops were called. No thief was apprehended.

Is there more of this type of crime going on recently?

In the past 8 years I can only remember hearing of one incident of something like this from people I know.

In the past month I've heard of 4, including an armed hold-up outside of a building in park slope. Another involved someone who had their door to their apartment kicked in after someone gained entry to the building through the back.

I hope this isn't a trend we're seeing.

Burglary has always been going on, it is not just some new trend.

When was the last time you heard of a locksmith going-out-of-business?

Closed and locked windows are not safe. A putty knife can be used to defeat the lock. Window gates are the only deterrent.
