57 Front St. open house
So i was able to convince the missus to go see the new Dumbo development at 57 front st, which was a former warehouse that has been renovated to loft condos. Size and prices range from 670 sq ft to 1210 sq ft to larger penthouses. most units are in the high $500s to over $1.2MM. We got there right at noon and we had to sign in w/ the usual name, address, salary, apt size desired, waiver, etc. we donned our hardhats when this 'precious' little girl came in, no more than 25 years old, who signed in and as she handed the clipboard back to the corcoran broker, sheepishly admitted that she left some things blank (like her salary). Apparently, she was checking out apts for herself, bankrolled by mommy and daddy, of course. She eyed the 7 or 8 units left over and she wanted unit 601 and 602. she wanted to knock the walls down and make it into a 1900 sq ft pad for her precious little self. mind you, both units were going to run her about $1.5MM, with about $1500 in monthly charges. As the missus and I toured the available units, we noticed that a lot of the bedrooms overlooked not the bklyn bridge or the water, but the window of the sweeney condos next door or some other condo unit set back from the street. in one $925K, 1210 sq ft stunner, the bedrooms had a view, from about 6 inches away from the window, of the huge, window-sized air vents from the condo next door. The broker deadpanned, 'you're probably gonna want to put some curtains up for those windows.' As we made our way down to a unique 1070 sq ft studio w/ common roof terrace for $570k, precious walked in and was on her cellphone, and all i could hear was, 'mom.....' in a very nasally annoying voice.
i couldn't hear the rest, but i could just imagine her saying, 'mom, i'm in love. i saw the one i want. well actually, two of them. I want to buy both and knock the walls down. won't you do it for your precious little daughter???' I wanted to bitch slap her. I immediately went to my broker's office to check on the status of our new construction condo in north prospect heights, home to more affordable housing.
