Atlantic Yards rally
Today's Atlantic Yards rallying cry was 'TIME OUT' on the Yards project, but the unions and contractors outwitted the protesters by showing up en masse to stage their own rally. Separated from each other by a phalanx of NYPD officers and a few strategically placed cars, the union members shouted slogans while whistling and pressing on air horns. Soon after, they walked counterclockwise around the footprint, going east on Pacific, north on Vanderbilt, west on Atlantic, south on 6th Avenue and then east on Pacific.
The cops were nearly caught unaware until they ran and cut them off at Carlton to prevent an ugly fracas.
Check out the pictures below - the anti-Atlantic-Yards protesters were definitely sparse in comparison to the union members.

You must have left early! Over the course of 2 1/2 hours over 800 community people showed up at the TimeOut on Atlantic Yards Rally because they believed in the cause.
200 union guys showed up because they were being paid.
no - was there from 1:45 to 4pm and there's no way there were 4x as many community people as union guys.
i'm hardly a pro-ratner guy but i think you're trying to create a different story than what really occurred.
you failed to mention that the union's require members to attend and that Ratner organized the rally, they marshalled in his mall.
you also failed to mentiont that they were shouting for union jobs, which would be nice, if there was a project to build, which there isn't. they should have been protesting Ratner.
i'm not arguing about how and why the protesters on each side got there. i'm saying that pro-ratner-ites outnumbered anti-ratner-ites.

There were more pro-Atlantic Yards Supporters present and they sent a message that was positive. Long Live the Atlantic Yards Project!!!!!
I saw pictures and video of the pro-ratner idiots..all thugs that were paid off to attend. And the things they were screaming were absurd and totally incorrect. I actually felt sorry for them for being so freaking stupid.

That's quite a naive take on the situation. The fact that someone happened to be in the counterprotest does not even necessarily mean they are a "pro-ratner-ite"; many of the folks there were required via the concept of union duty - the unions can more or less order members to attend rallies and protests such as this. The people involved may or may not have been pro-Ratner or pro-Atlantic Yards. Or they may have had no opinion one way or another, but felt obliged to go - if they ducked "union duty", they would (amongst other things) lose a day's vacation pay.
Many of those people were bussed in from Connecticut, Jersey, and Long Island. They certainly didn't speak for the community involved in the protest, not being Brooklynites themselves. Even moreso, if you look at the photos of the counterprotesters, most of them either had signs for their particular union (with no mention of FCRC or AY) or had "professional" signs designed by Ratner and co, and handed out to them.
"pro-ratner-ite"? Not necessarily. Yes, they were at the protest. But that doesn't mean they were up on the issues, nor that they supported the megadevelopment - just means that, for one of a variety of reasons, they happened to be standing there.
Whereas on the other side of the barriers, every person there was there because they truly believed in the cause at hand...
once again, many of you who oppose my comments are mincing words.
for sake of argument, there were 2 sides, anti-ratner (dddb, leteisha, et al) and paid-for-by-ratner. there, does that make it simpler for you to comprehend now?
the paid-for-by-ratner side outnumbered the anti-ratner side, plain and simple. any way you slice it and dice it.
i hate to say it. and i'm anti-ratner..naive or not. not even talking about the issues, who came from where, blah blah blah. the goons from nj/ct/pa outnumbered the brooklyn citizens...end of story..
Who cares if there were more gumba racist union guys there, that does not detract from the fact that this project is a big freaking joke. Guess who is going to lose the biggest? Not those so called Nimby's they'll be fine right? Its those union guys who will be jobless if this project goes through...and even Bertha Lewis herself won't even be able to afford the "affordable" housing. And Marie from "BUILD" she might be able to afford it with her 100,000 salary from Ratner.
Who cares if there were more paid Acorn and Union people. What is your point???
What the frick is a "pro - atlantic yard" supporter, that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Go build a school you can give those guys jobs as well. They have no clue what the project even is.
Knock down there house and tell them to rebuild it, and call that a job!
