Fort Greener believes in Obama, but still thinks racism is alive

Today's NYT article on blacks savoring Obama's victory in Iowa quotes the manager of Carol's Daughter as saying:

“Right now, it’s too good to be true, and I think most of us don’t want to get our hopes up too high,” said Eboni Anthony, 28, manager of Carol’s Daughter, which sells scented candles, soaps and moisturizers across the street from Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn. “I think racism is as alive as it was 30 years ago.

“I would love to believe in a fairy tale of having a black president. But I don’t believe the whole United States would agree to it.”

Just a month or so ago the Times reported that Blacks haven't felt this bad about their state of affairs since early in the Reagan administration. And the numbers show that the income gap between Blacks and Whites has actually grown over the past 30 years (although both incomes have risen over that time period). With Bush in office, Hurricane Katrina, Jenna 6 and whatnot, there isn't much reason to have hope. I haven't let my own hopes up too much, but am really hoping for an Obama presidency.

Based on what happened in Iowa and what is about to happen in NH tomorrow it looks like he is a strong favorite to get the Democratic bid. If so, does he have the strength to win the election? I hope so. If Americans choose a Republican (any Republican) after the crap that we have been through the last 8 years I'm seriously worried about the ignorance and reasoning ability of this country. We have now been driven to the verge of a recession (on top of everything else).

Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity. Translation: don't be surprised if John McCain or another Republican is the next president. NH proved that people are not quite ready to accept Obama. People were probably lying about who they voted for as they exited the polls, what does that say about your fellow Americans?

If people choose a white woman or even a white man over a black man, that does not make them racist. There are more variables at play. Get the chip off your shoulder or you will never see anything but racism and you will live a miserable life.
