NY's Finest shot in Fort Greene

Our cab back from Manhattan tonight was waylaid while heading up Myrtle Ave. The reason? A NYC cop was shot tonight at 14 Auburn Place in the Whitman Houses. NY1 says two assailants were also shot during the incident at around 7:30PM. NBC reports one of the assailants was also shot dead. WABC has more here.

The story is that Sgt James Rector was leaving work at the recruiting office in the Whitman Houses, came upon one man with a gun pointing it at another man who was on his knees on the ground. Rector asked the gunman to stop and that he was a cop. The thug pointed at the cop and both started shooting at each other and were shot. While both were on the floor, the cop witnessed the gunman handing his gun off to a man who sped off in a dark car with dark tinted windows.

So-- there's a police recruiting office in the Houses? I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, right?

i heard the shots outside my house on Adelphi and Dekalb around 7:30. and then there were so many cop cars speeding to the scene, i was wondering what had happened. kind of disheartening to read that someone ran away with the gun (not that one gun off the street would make a difference).

Can't beat 'em, join 'em? A sympathetic read of that statment might gather you are saying that since the cops have decided to stop beating the residents of public housing, they are now joining them in solidarity in order to seek to tackly social problems together. But I sort of think that you are making some snarky comment about all residents of public housing being criminals. Can we just have a moratorium on the beating up on public housing projects on curbed.com, brooklyner.com and this site?
