Reversal of fortune in Ft. Greene?
Never a dull day in Ft. Greene, we see, via brownstoner, two very intriguing developments rumored to be in the works for the neighborhood. For those who have noticed, at Lafayette and South Elliott, there has been a lot of construction lately.
First, the Video Basket, which was a very poor excuse for a video store, closed up. I recall going into the store 2 months ago, looking to open up a membership and noticing that they had about 15 DVDs for rent. They were likely put out of business by the far superior East Coast Video on Fulton next to Moshood.
Second, the yellow-front bodega that smelled like kitty litter was closed down. Long-rumored
(or was it fact?) to be an easy place to score some ganja, among other things, demolition crews were seen removing all the stuff from the building.
Third, right west of Academy diner and to the east of Corcoran, the building has also been cleared by demolition crews and I noticed that they are only keeping the front facade of the building, while the rear and inside has been completely razed.
Now, it seems like Video Basket is rumored to be taken over by Blimpie's and the bodega by a 24-hour Dunkin Donuts. This is a very interesting revelation, as it seems to be a move towards anti-gentrification. I'm sure heads would've rolled if it was announced that an upscale gourmet food store would be opening up. Now, if these rumors are true, neighborhood stalwarts have a reason to rejoice, as no self-serving yuppie would appreciate paying $2MM for a townhouse bookended by a Dunkin Donuts and a Blimpies. Quite a dilemma, huh?
