Restaurant Gia remodeling and Ralph's expanding

The word on the street is that Restaurant Gia on Lafayette Avenue is remodeling and turning their restaurant into a members-only bottle service lounge. Has anyone else got any news behind this morsel?

In other news, looks like Ralph of Meat Corp has taken over the space that used to be Boo's Bagels on Fulton St. Does anyone know what Ralph's sells? It can't be any worse than Boo's Bagels.

that sucks. i knew that the nabe might be getting oversaturated from an eatery point of view. too many places that were too similar, charging too much. i hope that these closings aren't a sign of broader problems.

I talked with Ralph about two months ago when he was working over at Boo's...he said he's making it a "sports lounge"...never really heard of such a thing, but I guess that means no liquor license so it's not a sports BAR, but same idea. Not sure how he's planning to make money that way...

huh? What's not to get about a sports lounge? Sports Bar + Lounge = Sports Lounge. Couches + TVs showing the game. The word lounge means booze to me so this just sounds like it's going to be a more upscale sports bar.

I had the pleasure of dining at Gia twice last summer, and it was really great. My mother, a real foodie from California, thought it was the best of all the restaurants we took her to in the area (including Madiba, Ici and Pequena). But I think the restaurant's design probably had something to do with its demise, because from the outside it was really hard to figure out that it was a restaurant at all, unless you walked up to the forbidding wooden door and peered at the menu in the window. All you could see from the street was a bar with a couple of guys at it. It was sort of an accident that we even found it the first time.
